If grip and iconic period look of the tread matter these can't be beat. As it turns out, the 180-15 XAS is still in production and matches the dimensions of the Redline. The most amazing tires I've had so far were Michelin 185-15 XAS which are NLA. They were second only to the Michelins for disappointing grip, etc. Next up were Avons which could be had from the supplier with red stripes these were H speed rated + English so an obvious choice.

No longer the daily driver by then, it had been souped up with cam and triple Webers so could outrun the tires, hence the Michelins got replaced. I finally got some in the early '80s and drove them until about '96 and they still had tread on them and no cracks in the rubber. I hankered for the Michelins when I was poor and a '250 was my daily driver. The tradition started with the TR250 stripe and its larger hood badge and supposedly there were some tweaks with the mufflers to make them sound more powerful as well. These went a long way toward offsetting the lesser performance than the P.I. If you have TR250 4 inch wires, this is the biggest tire that they recommend. If you’re into autox you might want the 205/70 because they are roughly 2% smaller diameter. I would stay away from the 205/70-15 or shorter profiles (like 60 series) unless you don’t care about how accurate your speedometer is. It costs too much to keep installing and balancing them. The ones I had were used, theyworked for a season, but I would not recommend used tires. Now, I had a set of Pirelli P5 215VR70-15’s on the Six last year, and those are really cool, but they cost >$160 per tire.

That’s a plus for me, because I drive a lot of long- distance runs with my car. And if I have a tire problem almost anywhere in the US, I can get one new tire from the any local Michelin dealer. I have driven quite a bit on them already this year (over 1000 miles so far) and they are pretty nice. These tires work out to be less than 1% larger overall diameter than the original. (Of course, whitewalls can be mounted with the black side out.)Īt any rate, I bought a set of Michelin XGT4 tires in the 215/70-15 size. The only problem that I saw was that a lot of the offerings in the “correct” size are white-walls… too tacky IMHO for a TR6.

The Michelins requires tubes, I don’t know about the others. Redlines: There are apparently three sources for red-lines. If you have wires or Mags, you might have different choices.
